A Close Call

The poor science teacher was on the receiving end of a student's upset stomach yesterday.  Getting thrown up on kind of comes with the job of teaching.  I was quickly baptized into the profession when a student tossed it on my shoes after a long, hot field day.  That was 22 years ago- at the end of my first year on the job.  Thankfully, it has never happened again.

Yesterday, I noted that Emma didn't look so good and asked her if she was feeling okay.

"I'm just really tired," she yawned.

I feel bad for my science teacher friend, but I'm happy that little Emma held it together for my class.

  1. So true- it is a rite of passage. For me it was all over the front of my wool crewneck sweater. Was not pretty getting that sweater off...
What a short and to the point slice you wrote!

  3. Oh no! But lol. I love the last line about being happy little Emma held it together for your class. Hehe. A couple of weeks ago I noticed a student looked uncomfortable and pale. I got the garbage can to her just in the nick of time and considered it a total victory.

  4. There are so many things they don't teach you about teaching...dealing with bodily fluids is a big one!

  6. I've never had that happen before... but I have had two students pass out in my class (not at the same time), and that was a scary moment!

  7. This was true for me, too! My experience was the first day of my teaching career...the janitors were held up, so I cleaned that first one up on my own, while 3rd graders gagged around me! Makes me giggle to remember, but not so funny at the time!! We couldn't make up these teaching stories if we tried!! :) Glad you escaped this time!

  8. Ha! I love the idea of being "baptized" with vomit. Hilarious. (WW Erin)

  9. Very funny Mary - ugh. Having been on both sides I would rather not remember either.

  10. The idea of this sends shudders down my spine. Don't tell my students but if they look a little pale and say their stomach hurts, I hand them a trash can and send them out the door. I am not taking any chances!

  12. Ugh. Poor Emma. Poor science teacher. Poor custodial staff. I remember the vomit dust they would drag out every time this happened in school. You've painted a not so pretty picture here, Mary,
